will you buy me, 2022, guerrilla performance with QR code, South Beach, Miami
I first introduced the phrase NOT FOR SALE in 2014 through a series of wearable art pieces, a collaborative bangle project, and a performance piece where I displayed it on my back in Las Vegas. This statement served as a shield and a message for anyone who has felt, been, or is treated as a commodity. A decade later, I deliberately reversed this stance with WILL YOU BUY ME, a project that confronts the cultural shift towards self-commodification in our post-modern, truth-variable era. Debuted during the art fairs in Miami, guerilla-style, I became a commodity myself. I stood with a QR code on my skin, blending in with the walls, the podiums, and the surrounding art, allowing people to scan, consume, and discard me. WILL YOU BUY ME serves as a commentary on cultural narcissism and the way individuals and organizations in positions of power commodify personal identity for visibility and profit. It highlights how sex, victimhood, imagery, polarization, and self-denial are packaged and sold via mass media, perpetuating a cycle of consumption and erasure… driving us further from understanding our true selves.
The "products" I offer evolve with the project. Currently, these include:
Katelyn's Advice: A direct phone call.
Katelyn's Smile: A physical object mailed to the buyer.
Katelyn's Debt: Community service performed on behalf of the purchaser.
